Almost 500 people attended today’s Fish & Game hearing (in person and virtually) which included four hours of discussion on coyotes.
Ranchers from the tip top of the state in Siskiyou County and Modoc County, all the way down to San Diego County, and all in between, voiced their opinions and commented on their personal experiences with coyotes. Multiple sheriffs around the state, including Lassen County Sheriff McGarva, also shared their concerns for their communities and livestock producers in their counties.
At the end of the comment period on the agenda item, the Commissioners decided not to move forward with any changes to take of coyotes at this time.
“I am encouraged that in their closing comments, both of the Commissioners seemed to be in support of leaving the take of coyotes as is for at least the time being,” California Cattlemen Association President Rick Roberti said. “It was eye-opening to see the opposition from many. Overall, while I believe it was a good day for livestock producers, I know our battle with predators rages on.” We will continue to watch for this discussion to come up again in future meeting agendas.
