If you’re planning to head north on I-5 the California Highway Patrol (CHP) says fires in Siskiyou and Shasta counties could make your trip more complicated.
CHP officials are expecting heavier traffic than normal during the 4th of July weekend because of the Salt Fire and the lane closures that come with that.
Caltrans has lane closures for all right lanes through the Lakehead area, both northbound and southbound. This is to help reduce traffic for the safety of fire personnel and their equipment that are actively fighting the fires.
They are also asking those planning on traveling to drive during non-commute hours, meaning leave earlier or later in the day.
CHP Officer Jason Morton said they have been dealing with aggressive drivers within the lane closures. He says CHP officers will not tolerate that type of behavior moving forward.
CHP will also be conducting a maximum enforcement period starting Friday at 6 p.m. all the way through Monday at midnight.
