PG&E warns customers about scammers and how to protect yourself from becoming a victim.
With recent increases in scams targeting PGE customers, the company is sharing how not to become a victim. Based on data collected in 2023, nearly 19,000 scam attempts were made, and customers lost about 342,000 in their money when falling for a scam. The scammer will call a customer, saying they are a representative of PG&E and advising the customer of immediate pay before shutting off their service. The scammer will request the customer to use a payment they are not formally using in their accounts payable to PG&E. Payments required from a scammer will include Zelle, a pre-paid debit card, a gift card, or a third-party digital payment mobile application. The scammer can even possess a fake 1-800 number when calling and offering the customer a rebate. Most targeted customers are low-income, the elderly, Real estate agents, and small businesses. PG&E advises if this happens to you, to hang up and contact your service company immediately or log into your account on PG&E. For more information, you can visit PGE.com/scams.
