You can buy a personal-use firewood permit for Lassen National Forest online or at certain district offices.
The permit costs $2.00 per cord, with a required minimum purchase of 10 cords, totaling $20.00.
The permit stays valid through December 31, 2026, and allows cutting for personal, non-commercial use only.
If you buy the permit online, print both the physical permit and wood tags. Carry them when cutting and transporting wood. Mobile copies on your phone won’t work.
You can also buy permits in person at local district offices. The Eagle Lake District Office sells them, but the Forest Supervisor’s office in Susanville does not.
Check the daily Project Activity Level and fire restrictions before cutting. Call 530-257-9553 after 4:30 PM to get updates for the next day.
You can only fell snags 20 inches or smaller in diameter, except for lodgepole pine.
Cutting dead hardwood trees is not allowed anywhere.
Avoid felling snags within 100 feet of paved roads and 200 feet of power lines or railroads.
Do not gather wood in active closure zones like the Park Fire closure area.
Following these rules helps protect the forest and keeps you safe while collecting firewood.
