A grasshopper outbreak is currently affecting grass and alfalfa hay crops in Modoc. The Devil’s Garden Research and Education UC extension says It’s crucial for all farmers to be vigilant and take proactive measures to protect your yields.
Here’s what they say you need to know to safeguard your crops:
Monitor Your Fields: Grasshoppers are actively feeding on grass and alfalfa hay, leading to significant yield loss. Keep a close watch on your fields for any signs of activity.
Identify Feeding Patterns: These pests typically start feeding on the margins and gradually move into the field. If you notice grasshoppers concentrated on the edges, treating the outside 150 feet can be effective.
When to Use Insecticides: Insecticides should be applied when grasshopper populations reach 20 per square yard in field margins or 8 per square yard within the field. For specific advice, consult your local extension office or Pest Control Advisor (PCA).

Coordinate with Neighbors: Grasshoppers can move quickly from one area to another, so coordinating control efforts with neighboring farms can increase the chances of successful management.
