The California Highway Patrol (CHP) has reported a tragic accident that occurred on January 30, 2025, at around 5:40 AM on US-395, north of Waldron Lane. The crash resulted in the deaths of three individuals. According to the CHP, the incident began when a 46-year-old woman from Susanville, driving a 2014 Dodge, made an unsafe pass while traveling southbound on Highway 395. This maneuver did not provide enough clearance for oncoming northbound traffic.
At the same time, a 67-year-old man from Janesville was driving a 2022 Toyota northbound on the same highway. In an attempt to avoid a collision, both drivers veered their vehicles onto the east paved shoulder of the highway, where the front ends of the Dodge and the Toyota collided and came to a stop.
Following the crash, a 52-year-old man from Susanville pulled over onto the west paved shoulder, exited his vehicle, and attempted to provide assistance to the individuals involved. During this time, a 60-year-old woman from Janesville, driving a 2018 Ford northbound, collided with the 52-year-old man standing outside the Dodge and Toyota. The Ford then struck the side of the Dodge.
After the accident, the driver of the Ford stopped on the shoulder and remained at the scene until emergency services arrived. Tragically, the driver of the Dodge, the driver of the Toyota, and the man from Susanville who attempted to help all died at the scene.
The CHP is currently investigating the crash and is asking anyone with information to contact the Susanville CHP at (530) 252-1800. The CHP expressed gratitude to the Lassen County Sheriff’s Department, CAL FIRE, Susan River Fire, Susanville Fire, CDCR High Desert Fire, SEMSA, Caltrans, Lassen County Road Department, and Finks Mortuary for their assistance in managing the aftermath of this tragic event.
