The U.S. Forest Service is investigating whether PG&E equipment or contractor work may have contributed to the start of the Twain Fire, which burned about 276 acres in the Feather River Canyon.
According to KQED, PG&E reported to the California Public Utilities Commission that a contractor was working on a steel transmission line pole near Highway 70 and Twain Store Road around noon on July 11. The Twain Fire was reported in the same area shortly afterward.
PG&E told KQED it is aware of the federal investigation and is conducting its own review.
The fire reached 95% containment by July 19. Kingsbury Grade Forest Road remains closed through July 31, while the Pacific Crest Trail remains open.
No official cause has been determined. The investigation has drawn additional attention because the fire occurred in the same area impacted by the 2021 Dixie Fire, which was determined to have been caused by PG&E equipment.
