DWR Considering Returning Chinook Salmon to Feather River Watershed

SHARE NOW

Chinook salmon may be returned to the Feather River Watershed above Lake Almanor.

The DWR is investigating the possibility of bringing back the spring-run Chinook to its historical habitat and is conducting a feasibility study. This study builds upon current DWR engagement in the area. It will evaluate the behavior of young salmon and the availability of high-quality habitat and the watershed using existing infrastructure. Through studies at the Feather River Fish Hatchery, planting eggs, and trapping, the DWR will prepare a report with the results and recommendations for further research with a completion date of July 2025. You will have a virtual and in-person opportunity to learn more about the project and ask questions this week. Tomorrow a Zoom meeting will be held from 5:30 to 7 pm, followed by an in-person meeting Wednesday at the Alamnor Recreation Center from 5:30 to 7 pm.

You can visit the DWR’s website for access details.
