Cedarville, located just over a two-hour drive from Susanville, offers an opportunity to explore the unique Great Basin desert. The Surprise Valley Hot Springs is an excellent choice for accommodation, featuring private hot tubs filled with mineral water, perfect for relaxation.

Traveling east on BLM’s Buckhorn and Barrel Springs Backcountry Roads, visitors can experience stunning views and rich history that showcase the ecological diversity of the region and the stories of emigrants who traveled west. Amidst the expansive sagebrush, rare plants and wildlife can be spotted. A visit to the Sheldon National Wildlife Refuge can fill an entire day with exploration.

The routes taken during the four-day visit were loops, ensuring that each turn reveals new scenery. The well-maintained gravel roads are suitable for mountain biking, with minimal traffic to interrupt the tranquil experience of the landscape. Given the remote nature of the area, it’s advisable to ensure vehicles are in good condition and to carry a survival kit with supplies for at least 24 hours. Satellite phone capability is also recommended, as there is no cell service in the backcountry. This trip offers a chance to disconnect and fully immerse in the beauty of the Great Basin, making it a destination worth revisiting.
