The state of the state’s snowpack remains overwhelmingly above average for spring. According to the Department of Water Resources, The California snowpack is hanging on at an impressive 337% of normal for this date statewide and 282% of normal for the northern Sierra. With the hot days ahead for this weekend, officials urge you to be extra cautious around waterways as snowmelt has rivers running high, fast, and extremely cold.
The Reno National Weather Service shares that water temperatures will range between 40 to 50 degrees and that even strong swimmers can begin to lose muscle control within 10 minutes in cold waters. The Susan River is projected to rise by another 2 feet, and increase flows above 900 cubic feet per second by Saturday.
You can monitor river status near you on the NOAA California Nevada River Forecast Center.
