Parents are expected to raise concerns about students’ bathroom use at this evening’s meeting of the Lassen Union High School Board of Trustees.
Parents claim their students told them that the high school would be installing port-a-potties on campus for thier primary use after shutting down the bathrooms.
SDN reached out to Superintendant Morgan Nugent to address these concerns. Nugent clarified that there have been ongoing issues with vandalism by students in the bathrooms during school hours, resulting in tens of thousands of dollars in damages. Water lines have been kicked, one bathroom facility has been flooded, soaps have been emptied onto the floors, creating fall risks, and sinks have been ripped off the walls.
Nugent says they need to complete the repairs to the facilities, forcing their closure for several weeks. To keep restroom access open, the school must place port-a-potties on campus. Nugent assured the portable restrooms would not be in the middle of campus but in a secure location.
Nugent also stressed that student behavior in the school’s restrooms has also warranted concern, noting that there is a growing problem of students gathering inside the stalls and vaping. He also said fights have often broke out with the restrooms.
In his administrative update, Nugent said he would discuss this issue and concerns when addressing the board.
The board meets this evening at 6 pm in the district’s board room.
