The City of Susanville has officially started its search for the first-ever Public Safety Chief. The city council gave the green light to the job description during its Wednesday session, in addition to updating the existing city code to outline this position’s responsibilities.
City Manager Dan Newton detailed that the newly defined role of “Public Safety Chief” will now encompass and replace all references to the “police chief,” “chief of police,” and “fire chief” in the city code.”
As the administrative head of the city’s public safety departments, the Public Safety Chief will oversee the Susanville Police Department, Susanville Fire Department, and the Public Safety Administrative Department. Candidates must be a sworn peace officer within California or possess the ability to obtain peace officer status in the state before appointment. Additionally, candidates are required to have both experience and training as a firefighter, along with holding a Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in Police Science, Fire Science, Public Administration, Political Science, or a closely related field.
The position comes with an annual salary ranging from $106,480 to $149,828.
