A construction company working on Pozzolan Plant in South Red Rock noticed a Great Horned owl flying around the site. When one of the structures came down, a nest containing baby owls and a mom fell out, and the mother flew away. The crew contacted The Defiance Canyon Raptor Rescue, placed the babies and nest back, and relocated the nest 10 feet off the ground. They saw the mom return to the nest that evening.
The following day the crew’s Foreman returned and checked on the nest to find 2 out of 3 babies left were nearly frozen. He wrapped them in his jacket and warmed them in his vehicle. The Defiance team was notified, and then the CHP of Susanville was called to rescue. A CHP officer responded and transported the Owls back to the Susanville office, where emergency care was given to the owlets.
The chicks were then transported to the Defiance Canyon Raptor Rescue. Sadly only one survived.
