As Chester’s special election looms just around the corner, the fate of the community’s fire department hangs in the balance. Set to take place on May 7th, ballots will soon find their way into mailboxes, offering a pivotal choice between Measures B and C.

Measure B proposes a $450 per parcel tax, aiming to bolster Chester’s volunteer fire department with resources for volunteer and per diem firefighters, as well as efficient EMS response, albeit without ground ambulance transport. Meanwhile, Measure C seeks a more substantial $1500 per parcel tax to establish a professional, full-time Fire Department. This measure would ensure round-the-clock coverage with up to three firefighters, assisted by volunteers and per diem staff, alongside a 24/7 ground ambulance service staffed by trained paramedics and EMTs.

Despite the potential benefits, the Chester Public Utility District (CPUD) highlights concerns over a nationwide decline in volunteer firefighters. Nonetheless, the district notes that four volunteers are currently undergoing background checks, potentially mitigating this issue.

Anticipating the implementation of one of these measures, the board of directors is working on instituting a tax oversight committee comprising community members. Tasked with scrutinizing tax revenues and expenditures, this committee aims to ensure transparency and accountability in resource management.

The outcome of this critical election will profoundly shape the landscape of fire protection and emergency services in Chester, underscoring the significance of every vote.
