The California Department of Fish and Wildlife (CDFW) is seeking public input and data regarding a petition to list the greater sage-grouse as a threatened or endangered species under the California Endangered Species Act (CESA).
The petition, submitted by the Center for Biological Diversity, prompted the Commission to consider the species as a candidate for listing, granting it legal protections during the status review process. CDFW has 12 months to conduct a comprehensive review and request information on various species’ aspects.
Public comments and data submissions are encouraged before April 12, 2024, and can be emailed or mailed. CDFW will produce a peer-reviewed report, publicly available for at least 30 days before the Commission’s final decision.
The greater sage-grouse faces habitat loss, fragmentation, climate change, predation, and disease threats. The Commission will ultimately decide whether to list the species as threatened or endangered under CESA, with CDFW providing scientific advisory support. Further details and relevant documents can be found on the Commission’s website.
