CDFW Begins Aerial Surveys Over Alturas, Susanville

Starting this week, you may spot aircraft conducting surveys from above. The aircraft is with the California Department of Fish and Wildlife (CDFW), which will be collecting data on big game populations. In Northern California, the CDFW will be counting deer and pronghorn. This week, efforts will be focused in and around Alturas. Starting February 24th through the 27th, the aircraft research crew will be circulating the Susanville area.

Data collected will be used towards managing populations, and given the recent harsh winter conditions will analyze how the animal’s numbers have been impacted.

This data will also be used to make recommendations to the California Fish and Game Commission about regulated hunting, like tag quotas, seasons, and zone boundaries.
