After years of anticipation, the historic Pegleg Lookout at Smokey Bear Park, situated within the Lassen County Fairgrounds, has finally been restored successfully. To celebrate this achievement, a ribbon-cutting ceremony has been scheduled during Fair week. The CALFIRE lookout had been closed for an extended period of time due to being condemned.
In 1984, the old Pegleg Lookout, which had faithfully served since 1913, was replaced by CAL FIRE with a new structure. The dismantled original lookout was relocated to Smokey Bear Park within the Fairgrounds, where its purpose was intended to be an educational center. Yet, the passage of time led to unsafe conditions, thus resulting in the condemnation of the structure. However, restoration efforts commenced this June, and they have now been completed just in time for the Fair. The extensive repairs included the installation of a new roof, as well as rebuilding, reinforcing, and painting the lookout tower and cab, both inside and out.
The community will once again have the opportunity to tour the Pegleg Lookout and delve into its rich history. The reopening will take place on Saturday, July 22, with a ribbon-cutting ceremony scheduled for 1:00 P.M. During this event, multiple agency representatives will deliver speeches highlighting the significance of the Pegleg Lookout.
