Did you buy a new iPhone? Neither did we, but we did just get contacted by a new scam.
WCSO would like to alert the community about a new scam, where scammers posing as customer service representatives leave voicemails stating you’ve purchased a new iPhone – and you must immediately call them back to have the charge reversed.
Here’s how it works:
You may receive a call from an unfamiliar number, possibly displaying a company name on the caller ID. The caller is asking you to authorize payment for a new iPhone. They then give you the option speaking to a representative if you did not authorize a payment (which you didn’t).
This scam is insidious because it creates urgency, allowing scammers to trick you into calling them and handing over sensitive information to confirm or deny the purchase. Legitimate companies will never send you unsolicited calls, texts or emails concerning purchases. To keep yourself safe, always check your bank account if you’ve received a voicemail like this.
If you suspect a scam or have fallen victim to one, immediately report it to the Washoe County Sheriff’s Office or local authorities. You can also report suspected fraud to the FTC at http://ReportFraud.ftc.gov.
