You may need to take a moment to check your pantry and spice rack. The Banner Poison and Drug Information Center has issued a warning about potential lead contamination in certain cinnamon products.
These ground cinnamon products according to the FDA contain elevated levels of lead.
According to Daniel Brooks, MD, the Medical Director of the Banner Poison and Drug Information Center, acute lead poisoning can manifest with symptoms like abdominal pain, headaches, constipation, and joint pain. These symptoms may seem minor, but prolonged exposure to lead can lead to severe health issues, particularly in vulnerable groups like children, pregnant women, and those with compromised immune systems.
The products include ground cinnamon from stores like Dollar Tree and Family Dollar made under the brand name Supreme tradition, and Save-A-Lot stores under the brand name Marucm. A full list can be found on the FDA recall list.
The FDA is advising consumers to throw these away and not to buy these ground cinnamon products any further. The FDA has recommended that the companies voluntarily recall these products.
If you’re worried that you or your child may have been exposed, don’t hesitate to reach out to your healthcare provider for a blood lead test. Your vigilance could prevent serious health complications down the line.
