Ballots will be hitting mailboxes as soon as today for some. Joining the local candidate races, voters will see several measures up for consideration, many centered on public safety.

However, Lassen County voters will be presented with two advisory-only measures, asking if you believe that the Board of Supervisors should appoint a Director of Finances. The county has consolidated its office of county auditor with the offices of the treasurer/tax collector, currently held by Nancy Cardenas.

Advisory Measures T and U will ask if the Lassen County Board of Supervisors should create a unified Director of Finance position, combining the roles of Auditor, Controller, Tax Collector, and Treasurer, with the new office taking effect after the current term of those positions expires,
and if the Board of Supervisors shall appoint it for a four-year term.

In Plumas County, voters will see measure A on their ballots. This is a measure to approve a ¾% transaction and use tax set to fund the services of the Sheriff’s Office. With two-thirds voter approval, Plumas County’s sales tax will increase from 7.25% to 8%, generating $2.4 million in local revenue.

According to Sheriff Johns, funds will increase deputy patrols and wages for Sheriff’s office staff.

Sierra County voters will be deciding on two public safety special taxes. Measure A pertains to the Downieville Fire Protection District and asks whether to renew a special property tax of $60 per year. This tax would fund Emergency Medical Services and Fire & Rescue Services, generating approximately $18,000 annually.

Meanwhile, Measure B addresses the Sierra City Fire District and proposes the renewal of a special property tax of $60 per year. This tax is intended to support Emergency Medical Services and Fire & Rescue Services, generating an estimated $28,000 annually. Like Measure A, Measure B suggests maintaining this tax until altered or repealed, accompanied by an increase in the district’s spending limit.

Notably, Plumas and Sierra County hold all mail-in-only elections, while Lassen will have polling locations, yet there are changes to be aware of. The Lassen County elections office states that your polling place has changed if you voted at the Susanville Community Church in the last election.

Your NEW voting location will be at the Lassen County Clerk/Election’s Office at 220 S. Lassen St. in the Annex Building behind the Historical Courthouse in uptown.
