In a rare August weather event, Lassen Peak received approximately 6 inches of snow as a storm brought temperatures more typical of mid-November. The National Weather Service recorded an all-time low high temperature of 57 degrees at the Reno Tahoe Airport, underscoring the unusual cold spell.
The National Park Service temporarily closed Highway 89 through the park due to the significant snowfall. While the road is now wet but clear, high-elevation trails, including the Lassen Peak Trail, remain snow-covered. Visitors are urged to exercise caution and choose trails suited to their experience level.
Lassen Volcanic National Park is in the process of a phased reopening following the 2024 Park Fire closures. For updates on reopened areas, please visit the park’s Current Conditions webpage.
