Squalls Threaten Dangerous Travel Conditions

The National Weather Service predicts a chance for squalls for your commute to work and school today. Here’s what you need to know:

A squall is an intense, short-lived burst of heavy snowfall that leads to the sudden reduction of visibility accompanied by gusty winds.
This means you can experience sudden whiteout conditions. Travel is hazardous during these times; major highway travel is not recommended if you can avoid staying off the roadways.

Squalls have the potential to stall over an area and prolong travel disruptions.

Snow rates could be up to 2 inches per hour, and with the high winds following the squall, flash freezes on the roadways are likely to create very slick conditions. Lassen County, up through Madeline, can expect the potential for these weather events to peak from 10 am to 2 pm and later if traveling into the Reno area.

If travel is unavoidable, you are cautioned to prepare an emergency kit, including food, water, and blankets, and be prepared for possible extended delays.

You can prepare at home by stocking up on batteries and being prepared for power outages.
