Highway 70 through the canyon has re-opened as of last evening, February 8th, around 5 pm to one-way traffic control.
Caltrans says you can expect some delays as the scaling work continues, yet the rockslide has been removed, and the mountainside has been cleared as stable.
The 50-mile stretch from the Greenville Wye to Jarbo Gap in Butte County has been a fluid situation as it has been closed off and on again multiple times due to slides following the region’s first significant rain event of the season. The recent slide occurred through the Cresta area, near the Shady Rest Area.
Officials say a nearly 60 million dollar project has been underway since February of last year to elevate the roadway by 5 feet and fortify the embankment.
Work is expected to be completed by 2025.
