The final room of the Lassen Historical Courthouse has a name.

Earlier this month, the supervisors approved four of the five names needed for the conference rooms in the renovated courthouse. The final room remained unnamed, as the supervisors suggested they reach out to the Susanville Indian Rancheria to do the honors.

Today, CAO Richard Egan announced that the Tribal council has asked that the room be named Lt. Col. Leonard Lowry. Lowry served in World War ll, Korea, and Vietman and was honored with the Distinguished Service Cross, Silver Star, Purple Heart, Legion of Merit, and World War ll Victory Medal. LTC Lowry served in the famous Second American Infantry Indian Head Division during the Korean War. He was the most decorated Native American to serve in World War ll and a very affluent individual in Susanville’s history.

His daughter Judith Lowry is continuing his legacy in reviving the Grand Cafe, his picture adorns the mantle in the historic building.

The supervisors named the other rooms In recognition of Senator and Assemblywoman Dahle’s pivotal role in securing the initial 8.5 million dollar grant to initiate the project on the century-old historic building, with other conference rooms within the courthouse honoring local figures of influence, including former supervisor Jim Chapman for his dedicated service to the county, which spanned over 40 years on the board, along with the Susan Roop and Peter Lassen rooms, paying homage to the town’s founders.
