The California Department of Fish and Wildlife funds millions for salmon restoration efforts to battle climate change. The department announced $100 million would support restoration and protection projects to bolster the fish’s resiliency to drought. Divvying up $20 million to Klamath River Watershed projects and up to $10 million each to projects on the Scott River and Shasta River. Over the years, due to drought conditions, salmon spawning has declined despite efforts to assist the runs. CDFW Director Charlton H. Bonham said, “The time to act is right now … This funding is absolutely the push we all need to put some large-scale projects across the finish line.” The funding is part of the availability of over $200 million new funding for multi-benefit ecosystem restoration and protection projects under Drought, Climate, and Nature-Based Solutions Initiatives.
