CDFW Director Meghan Hertel joined with Hoopa Valley Tribal Chairman Joe Davis, federal, state and Tribal fisheries officials on Tuesday to officially dedicate and celebrate a new, jointly operated fish weir on the Lower Trinity River. The weir, located on the Hoopa Valley Reservation, will further scientific goals and monitoring of salmon and steelhead populations while supporting cultural practices and allowing for limited Tribal harvest. Prior to the construction of the new weir, CDFW and the Hoopa Valley Tribe each operated separate weirs on different parts of the river. The new weir signals a new era of cooperation and greater efficiency while removing the number of barriers salmon and steelhead face on their spawning runs upstream.
