Wetting Rains Aid Firefighting Resources Increasing Containment

Highlights: Firefighters are aggressively attacking both fires to increase containment so residents can return home as quickly as it is safe to do so. Containment on the Bug Fire has more than doubled to 31%, with the southern flank near Cold Springs fully secured, and the Stallion Fire now stands at 44% containment. Crews secured the northwest flank of the Bug Fire, allowing Highway 395 to reopen, and evacuation orders have been lifted for portions of Red Rock Road and Hungry Valley, allowing those residents to return home. As crews continue to strengthen and secure containment lines, we are working closely with the Washoe County Sheriff’s Office and Tribal authorities to reduce evacuation levels in additional communities as soon as conditions allow.
Operations: Yesterday, wetting rains over the fire area aided crews who were directly attacking the fire’s edge, protecting structures, and securing properties in communities around both fires. On the Bug Fire, crews made strong progress on the southern (Cold Springs) and northern (Petersen Mountains) flanks. Day and night shifts continue direct suppression, burnout operations where needed to secure primary containment features, and mop-up around impacted and threatened structures. On the Stallion Fire, crews adapted to weather impacts and secured additional perimeter on the eastern flank toward Palomino Valley. Today, crews on both fires will press direct suppression while conditions favor it, extinguish remaining heat near the fire’s edge, and strengthen containment lines. Every section of line secured brings communities closer to returning home.
Weather, Fire Behavior and Smoke: Thunderstorms with the potential for rain are forecasted again today, with cooler temperatures and higher humidity moderating fire behavior. Gusty and erratic thunderstorm outflow winds up to 40 mph remain possible and can push fire in new directions with little warning. A warming and drying trend is forecast in the coming days, which is why crews are working aggressively now to secure line while conditions are favorable. Smoke from the Bug, Stallion, and other regional fires may continue to impact surrounding communities. Local air-quality conditions can be found at Fire.AirNow.gov.
