If you were planning a camping trip to Golden Trout Campground later this summer, you’ll need to make other plans.
The U.S. Forest Service has closed Golden Trout Campground for the remainder of the 2026 season as construction begins on the Golden Trout Bridge Replacement Project.
The campground and a section of Forest Road 22N24 closed at 2 p.m. Sunday, August 2, with construction getting underway Monday. Crews will remove the existing bridge, rebuild its supporting structures, and install a new bridge. Because the road provides the only access to the campground, the site will remain closed until the project is complete.
The closure comes later than originally planned. Construction was initially expected to begin in late spring, which would have canceled the entire camping season. Delays pushed the start date into August, allowing visitors to enjoy most of the summer before work began.
Forest officials have not announced a reopening date but expect the campground to reopen sometime in 2027 once construction is finished.
The closure is being enforced under Forest Closure Order No. 05-11-03-26-01. Anyone entering the closed area could face fines of up to $5,000 for individuals or $10,000 for organizations, along with possible jail time.
