Drivers traveling through Cromberg in Plumas County should prepare for extended delays as Caltrans begins around-the-clock traffic control for a major rehabilitation project on State Route 70.

Starting tentatively July 13, crews will implement 24/7 traffic control through the Cromberg area as work continues on the Cromberg Combined Rehabilitation Project. Motorists can expect delays of up to 25 minutes, with impacts expected to continue through the remainder of the summer.

The $101 million project is designed to fully restore the roadway and improve the driving experience along the corridor. Work includes resurfacing and rehabilitation of the highway, shoulder widening, new guardrails and bridge rail, drainage improvements, upgrades to existing ADA facilities, and additional safety enhancements.

The project includes 360 working days, all of which will require some level of traffic control. Caltrans says nighttime work will be used when feasible and safe to help reduce impacts on travelers.

Construction is being completed by contractor Mercer-Fraser Company, in partnership with Caltrans District 2 and North Region Construction. The project is expected to be completed by winter 2026.

Caltrans is reminding drivers to plan for extra travel time and thanking motorists and local communities for their patience while the improvements are underway.
