If you’ve been thinking about giving fishing a try, or introducing someone new to the sport, this Friday offers the perfect opportunity.
The California Department of Fish and Wildlife is celebrating Independence Day with the state’s first Free Fishing Day of 2026, allowing anyone to fish in California’s lakes, rivers, and streams without purchasing a fishing license.
While a license won’t be required for the day, all other fishing regulations remain in effect. Anglers must still follow bag and size limits, gear restrictions, fishing hours, stream closures, and any required report card rules.
The department says Free Fishing Days are designed to encourage more people to experience California’s world-class fishing opportunities while enjoying time outdoors with family and friends.
Those looking for a good place to cast a line can find a list of recently stocked lakes and waterways through the California Department of Fish and Wildlife’s online Fish Planting Schedule. Additional information about Free Fishing Day and current fishing regulations is available on the department’s website.
