The Plumas County Library reports its free Summer Reading Program began June 15 and will run through Aug. 15. It is open to all Plumas County children and youth ages 0 to 18 at all library branches. A library card is not required for participation.
The 2026 theme is “Plant a Seed, Read!” Participants can visit their local library branch and pick up their reading challenge reading log. They set a weekly goal for themselves, or develop the goal with the help of their parents or caregivers. Goals can be pages per day, minutes per day or books per day or week. Being read to by a caregiver counts for children who can’t read for themselves yet.
When readers reach their weekly goal, they bring their logs to their library branch and staff will mark that week as completed. The reader may then choose a prize and fill out a ticket for a chance to win a gift card or gift certificate after the challenge concludes Aug. 15. Each branch will hold its own drawing and prize giveaway.
Live presentations will also be offered at each branch during the course of the summer break. Library staff encourage the community to watch the library’s Facebook page and look for flyers for details.
The Portola branch has paused its story time during the Summer Reading Program. It is hosting an Early Reader Book Club every Wednesday from 10 to 11 a.m. The Quincy branch continues to offer preschool story time Thursdays from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. The Chester branch story time runs 11 a.m. to noon the second and fourth Wednesdays of each month.
