Lake Almanor Stays Full for Summer Fun: Bucks Lake on the Decline

If you’re planning to spend time on the water this summer, Lake Almanor is shaping up to be the place to be.

Pacific Gas and Electric reports that Lake Almanor will remain higher than normal throughout much of the summer recreation season. Thanks to strong carryover storage from last year and precipitation totals that reached 108 percent of average, the lake is expected to stay about three feet above its typical summer level.

That’s welcome news for boaters, anglers, and visitors heading to the area. Lake Almanor reached full pool in early June and is projected to remain near that level through the Fourth of July before gradually dropping by Labor Day.

Bucks Lake tells a different story.

An unusually rapid snowmelt earlier this spring caused Bucks Lake to fill nearly two months ahead of schedule. However, with very little remaining snowpack to feed the lake through late spring and summer, water levels are expected to run two to three feet below normal during the peak recreation season. PG&E also says lake levels there will fall more quickly this fall as crews prepare for dam and boat ramp improvement work.
