Starting today, Monday, June 1 there will be a temporary lane closure on Skyway due to construction at the entrance to the new Forest Service fire station located at 1350 Skyway.
The right lane heading east on Skyway will be closed for approximately two weeks starting near the bridge before the building site.
Workers will be paving and connecting the new entrance for the fire station to Skyway.
The lane closure will be highly visible. Drivers are asked to slow down and change lanes for public and contractor safety.
Construction of the new fire station is progressing this spring, with structures being built following utility and other site preparation work. Currently, the facility is expected to be completed by winter 2026.
Formally known as the Feather River Work Center, the new fire station will house Feather River Crew 3 and one of two Plumas National Forest Feather River Ranger District engines that lost their station at Brush Creek Work Center during the 2020 North Complex.
The building location is on existing National Forest System lands at the Chico Seed Orchard administered by the Mendocino National Forest. The land is separated by the Butte Creek Diversion Channel and is approximately seven acres with a few trees along the fence line along Skyway.
Plans are continuing to rebuild the Brush Creek Work Center, which will house an engine and provide facilities for resource specialists, including foresters, and a tree cooler to support reforestation efforts.
