Over the past several decades, CDFW has partnered with the Almanor Fishing Association to support its Fish Pen Program. The department’s Darrah Springs Hatchery raises and supplies the program annually with approximately 50,000 rainbow trout at the sub catchable size. These fish are transported to Lake Almanor where they are further raised in net pens directly in the lake by program volunteers. Funding to maintain the net pens and purchase fish feed comes from the Almanor Fishing Association. In spring, once they reach catchable size, the trout are released from the net pens.
