Senator Megan Dahle recently surveyed more than 2,000 constituents in California’s 1st Senate District about a bill to study the reintroduction of grizzly bears in the state. One possible site for this reintroduction is the mountains of western Siskiyou County, making the issue local and immediate.
Most respondents, over three-quarters, opposed the idea. Their concerns focus on practical issues rather than fear. Many believe California no longer has the right habitat or enough prey to support grizzlies. Safety worries surfaced for hikers and hunters who use these lands.
Livestock owners in Northern California already face challenges from protected gray wolves preying on their animals. Adding grizzlies could increase risks and losses. People also noted that the California Department of Fish and Wildlife struggles to manage current wildlife and might not handle grizzly bears effectively.
Senator Dahle thanked everyone who shared their views, including supporters of the grizzly’s return. She plans to oppose SB 1305, the bill that would study the reintroduction.
