1935-2026
Janice Evelyn Brennan McGarva Flyn
July 15, 1935 – March 8, 2026
Janice was born on July 15, 1935, in Alturas, California, to Ray and Dorothy Brennan.
Janice attended Modoc High School in Alturas, where she was the Majorette for the High School Band. Janice met her future husband, her football star sweetheart, Ned McGarva. Following high school she attended Chico State University. Ned and Janice were married June 6, 1954, beginning a life together filled with family, hard work, and deep friendships.
Ned and Janice eventually made their home in Grass Valley, California, where they raised their three children, Lynn, Bob, and Jim. A special bond was created when Lynn was born on Janice’s 21st birthday, a birthday that they tried to share together each year.
Janice built a long and respected career as the Business Manager at Sierra Nevada Memorial Hospital, where she worked for over 35 years.
After Ned’s passing in 1981, Janice found love again and married Bob Flynn. They shared their lives together until his passing in the 1990’s.
Janice was deeply devoted to her family and community. She volunteered for many community services and was known for her kindness, loyalty, and generosity. She loved her children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren deeply. Her grandchildren lovingly called her “Grammie”, a name that reflected the warmth and love she gave so freely. If you were lucky enough to be Janice’s friend, you were a friend for life.
Janice is survived by her daughter, Lynn McGarva; her two sons, Bob McGarva (Coletta Shellmer) and Jim McGarva (Juli); her grandchildren, and many, many, dear lifelong friends.
In Celebration of Janice’s life a Mass for Janice will be held at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, 507 E. 4th Street, Alturas, California at 11:00 am on Thursday, March 26th, 2026. A reception will follow the interment services. Interment will be at the Alturas Cemetery. Luncheon will be in the Parish Hall behind the Catholic Church.
Her love, strength, and lifelong friendships will live on in the hearts of allwho were fortunate enough to know her.
