Residents in the Shaffer community have approved a school facilities bond aimed at funding improvements to the local campus, and district leaders are now taking steps to ensure those funds are managed as promised.

Superintendent Dr. Joshua Blackburn of the Shaffer Union Elementary School District announced that the district is forming a Shaffer Citizens’ Bond Oversight Committee, a group required under California law whenever school bonds are passed.

The committee’s role will be to monitor how bond dollars are spent and to confirm that funds are used strictly for facilities projects outlined to voters. By law, bond money cannot be used for salaries or day-to-day operating expenses.

The district is currently seeking volunteers from several segments of the community, including a representative from the business community, a senior citizen organization member, a taxpayer organization representative, a parent of a currently enrolled student, a parent active in a parent-teacher organization, and additional at-large community members.

The positions are unpaid and are intended to promote transparency and accountability as campus improvement projects move forward.

Community members interested in serving on the oversight committee are encouraged to contact the superintendent’s office for further information about responsibilities and meeting schedules.

District officials say the formation of the committee marks the next step in carrying out the will of voters and maintaining public trust as improvements get underway.
