Tax season is here, and mail theft tends to increase this time of year.
Criminals often target envelopes that may contain checks or personal information. A few simple steps can reduce your risk.
Protect yourself:
• Check your mailbox daily. Do not leave mail overnight.
• Consider installing a locking mailbox.
• Use electronic delivery for tax documents when available.
• Choose direct deposit for tax refunds.
• Drop outgoing mail inside the post office rather than curbside boxes.
• Shred documents with personal information before discarding them.
Warning signs of tax identity theft:
• You receive a refund you did not file for.
• Your return is rejected because one was already filed in your name.
• You receive an IRS notice or tax document for an account you did not open.
If you are a victim:
• Report stolen mail to local law enforcement.
• File a report with the U.S. Postal Inspection Service.
• Contact your bank immediately if checks were involved.
• Place a fraud alert and monitor your accounts.
• Report tax identity theft to the IRS.
See something suspicious around mailboxes? Report it.
