Modoc District Attorney issued the following press release.
Alturas, CA-On Tuesday, January 14, 2026 defendant Jessica Beard was convicted by a jury of her peers on multiple felony and misdemeanor charges.
The defendant was found guilty of the following offenses: Felony violations of:
Health and Safety Code section 11370.1(a) -Possession of a controlled substance while armed Penal Code section 273a(a) (two counts) -Child abuse/endangerment Health and Safety Code section 11550(е) – Being under the influence of a controlled substance while responsible for a child
Misdemeanor violations of:
• Health and Safety Code section 11377(a) -Possession of a controlled substance
Health and Safety Code section 11364- Possession of drug paraphernalia
The jury further found aggravating factors under California Rule of Court 4.421(a), including that the offenses involved two vulnerable victims.
The defendant was found not guilty of the following charges:
Felony violations of:
• Penal Code section 29800(a)(1) (two counts)-Addict in possession of a firearm
Penal Code section 30305(a)(1) -Addict in possession of ammunition
Penal Code section 23900-Altered or obliterated firearm identification
Penal Code section 496(a)- Receiving stolen property
Health and Safety Code section 11379(a) -Transportation of a controlled
substance
Misdemeanor violation of:
• Penal Code section 466-Possession of burglary tools
A sentencing hearing is scheduled for February 25, 2026.
