California’s 2025-26 waterfowl hunting season opens Saturday, October 18, 2025, in most zones. Favorable wetland conditions across the state promise a strong start for hunters. Detailed season dates, daily bag and possession limits, and area-specific regulations are available in the 2025-26 California Waterfowl, Upland Game, and Public Use of Department Lands Regulations booklet.
Key updates for this season include new procedures at public hunt area check-stations:
- Hunters needing a hunting pass must show photo ID at entry.
- Reservations accepted in numerical order, except at Grizzly Island Wildlife Area.
- Party leaders must have a valid GO ID and hunting license to enter a party in the in-person vacancy draw (lottery).
- Lottery results will be posted online via the CDFW License App, Online License Sales and Services, or a QR code at check-stations.
- Only one party member is required to be present for in-person vacancy draws where all party members must be listed.
- Hunters may enter only one in-person vacancy draw per hunt day.
Public hunting is available at over two dozen public hunt areas statewide. Hunters should purchase licenses, validations, and passes in advance through CDFW offices, approved license agents, online, or by phone at (800) 565-1458. Check CDFW’s Closures web page for updates on wildlife area and refuge closures.
Due to ongoing circulation of avian influenza H5N1 among wild waterfowl, hunters are advised to take safety precautions when handling harvested birds and cleaning equipment. Key safety tips include dressing game in well-ventilated areas away from domestic birds, and never feeding raw meat or organs from harvested waterfowl to dogs or other pets.
For complete details, regulations, and safety information, hunters should consult the 2025 Waterfowl Hunting Newsletter and the official CDFW resources.
