Evacuation Warnings Lifted After Suspicious Device Detonated in Weaverville

Evacuation warnings were issued in Weaverville on Wednesday morning following the discovery of a suspicious item believed to be an improvised explosive device (IED) near the Community Forest on Mill Street. The Trinity County Sheriff’s Office (TCSO) received a report from a community member at approximately 8:45 a.m. Deputies found a capped metal pipe with signs of drilling upon arrival.

The area was quickly secured, and assistance was requested from the Shasta County Bomb Squad, which confirmed that the item was a live IED. The bomb squad successfully detonated the device and will conduct a detailed examination of the remnants, with a formal report to follow.

Deputies conducted a search of the surrounding area for additional devices but found none. An investigator from the Bureau of Land Management is leading the ongoing criminal investigation related to this incident.

As a precaution, the Community Forest area near Mill Street was closed to the public during the investigation. Evacuation warnings were issued for zones WVR-215, WVR-217, WVR-222, WVR-223, and WVR-224, but these warnings have since been lifted, and the areas have returned to normal status.
