You may have noticed the “Rough Road” caution signs over Fredonyer summit over the last week, now determined to have been the result of recent earthquakes in the area. Due to the uneven surface emergency repairs have been announced for the stretch of the roadway just east of Coppervale along SR 36 near the Summit.
Caltrans District 2 and contractors say it will cost 375,000 dollars to repair the pavement deformations caused by the rumbles that began in early May at magnitudes over 5.0 on the Richter scale. Smaller quakes have continued to shake the area over the last several weeks but at much smaller and rather undetected magnitudes. When the initial shock happened, Caltrans crews were sent to the numerous bridges throughout their territory to inspect for damage, yet reported the crossings remained sound and safe for travel.
With this project, you can expect work to begin on Monday, August 14th. There will be one-way traffic controls with up to 10-minute delays, Monday through Friday, during daytime hours.
Caltrans says this is a short-term project anticipated to take about a week.
