State lawmakers are facing the fentanyl crisis head-on today. Assemblywoman Dahle shared that Fentanyl overdose is the leading cause of death among 18-45-year-olds in the US, with 500 Californians dying monthly from fentanyl-related deaths. Adding that time to act is running out. Dahle and others on both sides of the line demand action & aim to bring common sense bills to the floor for a vote.
The Assembly Republican Caucus says Assembly Republicans will move to withdraw bills from the Assembly Public Safety Committee and take them up for a vote on the floor, forcing lawmakers to pick a side between protecting Californians from fentanyl poisoning or protecting drug dealers who profit off the overdose epidemic.
They seek to take up five bills that will establish a Fentanyl Addiction and Overdose Prevention Task Force, add a sentencing enhancement for fentanyl dealers who kill or seriously injure people they sell the drug to, prohibit carrying a gun while in possession of fentanyl., increase penalties for fentanyl dealers who sell on social media, and increase penalties for those possessing large quantities of the drug.
You can view the floor session today starting at 9 am on the California State Assembly website.
