Scammers are not taking a break for the holidays, as they are targeting Bay Area residents with fake text messages about FasTrak. The messages claim that recipients owe money for using a toll lane and must pay to avoid late fees and legal action. Several individuals, including Jackie in Willow Glen and Alex in Fremont, reported these texts. FasTrak has confirmed that these messages are fraudulent. John Goodwin, a FasTrak representative, suggested that the scam is an attempt to steal credit card information for larger purchases. The warning signs include a phone number from the Philippines and a payment link that does not direct to the official Bay Area FasTrak site. This issue was previously reported by NBC Bay Area when similar messages appeared four months ago. FasTrak has stated that it does not communicate billing issues via text messages with payment links.
