A wildfire known as the Silver Fire has rapidly expanded near Bishop, leading to evacuation orders for parts of Inyo and Mono counties. The fire started around 2:11 p.m. near Highway 6 and Silver Canyon Road, as reported by Cal Fire’s San Bernardino unit. By 8 p.m., it had consumed 1,000 acres, posing a threat to nearby structures and power lines, with no containment achieved.
The National Weather Service reported wind gusts of 25-35 mph at Bishop Airport, coming from the west/southwest, with a relative humidity of approximately 10%. A high wind warning is in place from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. on Monday, with gusts potentially reaching 65 mph, complicating firefighting efforts and grounding some aircraft.
In response to safety concerns, a 30-mile section of Highway 6 has been closed. Firefighting teams from San Bernardino and Riverside Counties are actively working to control the blaze. The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
