San Jose Mayor Matt Mahan, a moderate Democrat known for his pragmatic approach and focus on homelessness, has officially entered the crowded 2026 California gubernatorial race. Mahan, who has positioned himself as both a critic and a collaborator of Governor Gavin Newsom, aims to appeal to working-class voters by promising to “put toxic politics aside,” avoid new taxes, cut red tape to accelerate housing construction, and expand drug treatment for unhoused populations.
Mahan gained recognition for his tough stance on homelessness in San Jose, including advocating for tiny homes as quicker, cost-effective alternatives to traditional shelters and supporting enforcement measures against those refusing multiple shelter offers. He supported Proposition 36 in 2024, a ballot measure increasing penalties for certain drug and theft offenses and promoting treatment programs, a position at odds with much of the Democratic Party but popular with voters.
Backed by influential tech and business leaders such as Rick Caruso and Y Combinator’s Garry Tan, Mahan emphasizes continuity with some of Newsom’s initiatives, including homelessness funding and CARE Courts, while pledging a more pragmatic and results-driven governance style. Despite the crowded Democratic field—which includes Rep. Eric Swalwell, former Congresswoman Katie Porter, and billionaire Tom Steyer—Mahan hopes to carve out a distinct moderate path.
The open race has also increased speculation about Republican challengers, with recent polls occasionally showing GOP candidates like Fox News commentator Steve Hilton or Riverside County Sheriff Chad Bianco leading, despite Democrats outnumbering Republicans nearly two-to-one in the state. The June primary’s top-two system could further shake up the contest in the months ahead.
