Butte County Public Health is notifying the community about ongoing norovirus outbreaks at an outdoor environmental camp in Nevada County, which have affected elementary school students from Butte County. There have been three separate outbreaks at the camp, prompting officials to inform parents and guardians as decisions about camp attendance are made.

The camp, Shady Creek Outdoor School & Event Center, has taken steps to mitigate the spread of the virus, including enhanced cleaning protocols and isolating sick campers. Laboratory tests have confirmed norovirus in 36 individuals at the camp, with symptoms reported among attendees.

Norovirus is highly contagious and can lead to vomiting, diarrhea, and stomach pain. Symptoms typically last one to three days, but individuals can remain contagious for 48 hours after symptoms cease. While most recover without medical intervention, those at higher risk for dehydration should take extra precautions.

BCPH is working with local schools and health departments to monitor the situation and provide guidance on illness prevention. Schools planning visits to the camp have been alerted to implement necessary precautions.

To prevent the spread of norovirus, BCPH recommends frequent handwashing with soap and water, staying home when ill, and disinfecting surfaces, noting that alcohol-based sanitizers are ineffective against the virus.
