Massive Fire at Chevron Refinery in El Segundo Now Under Control

A large fire erupted Thursday night around 9 p.m. at Chevron’s El Segundo refinery, sending towering flames and thick smoke visible for miles across the South Bay. The refinery, the largest oil-producing site on the West Coast, experienced the blaze at a process unit located in the southeast corner of the facility.

Officials confirmed that all refinery personnel and contractors have been accounted for, and no injuries were reported. Torrance Fire Department monitored the situation and reported no impact on the city. No evacuation orders were issued, but residents were advised to stay indoors as a precaution.

By early Friday morning, crews had largely contained the fire by around 7 a.m., though firefighters remained on scene to fully extinguish the remaining flames. The cause of the fire has not yet been determined, and investigations are ongoing.

Chevron spokesperson Allison Cook stated it is too early to assess whether this incident will affect gas prices. Further updates will be provided as more information becomes available.
