Skiers and snowboarders in Lake Tahoe should be aware of heightened enforcement against ski pass fraud. The California Highway Patrol (CHP) and resort officials have intensified efforts to address the increasing misuse of ski passes in the region. As stated by Deputy John Weaver from CHP’s South Lake Tahoe unit, the use of someone else’s ski pass is not only against resort policies but is also illegal.
The crackdown is in response to a rise in violations, leading resorts and law enforcement to work together on more stringent verification processes and public education campaigns. Resorts in the Tahoe area are now conducting more rigorous ID checks, employing advanced scanning technology, and promoting awareness of the penalties involved.
Violators face immediate consequences such as pass revocation, fines over $500, and potentially permanent bans from the resort. Legally, under California’s Penal Code § 537, misuse of services valued under $950 is considered petty theft, which can result in fines and up to six months in jail. More severe cases may be classified as grand theft, involving harsher penalties.
With the recent snowfall creating ideal skiing conditions, officials urge visitors to comply with regulations to avoid legal trouble. Keeping ski passes secure and adhering to the rules ensures a safe and enjoyable experience on the slopes.
