Input Needed for New Cal Fire Defensible Space Zone

CAL FIRE is partnering with the California Board of Forestry and Fire Protection to develop a new defensible space zone for wildfire resilience.

The new space, known as Zone 0, will be within the 0–5-foot range of your home or business. On the Cal Fire website, you can find information about Zone 0, where Cal Fire says The first five feet from your home is the most important because flying embers ignite the majority of homes lost to wildfire. The zone requires hardscapes like gravel or pavers to replace combustible materials such as bark or mulch and also recommends limiting clutter on decks, including planters and patio furniture.

The departments are asking for all renters, homeowners, and business owners to help participate in a survey to understand the cost estimates for implementing these new science-driven defensible space standards. The survey asks questions regarding landscape maintenance, whether you own or rent, and whether you live in a very high fire severity zone. The survey is brief, taking around 5 minutes to complete. It will remain open through April 5th.

The next chance for you to provide input on the proposed Zone 0 defensible space regulations will follow a 45-day public comment period, expected to take place this fall.

The survey can be found on Cal Fire’s social media.
